Introduction on Sampling Technique

Statistics require volume of data analyze and interpret the results to arrive at meaningful conclusions. Data may be collected through secondary source or primary source. When the secondary data cannot be collected, primary data should be collected. Primary data could be either following census method or sampling method.

The former refers to the collection of data from all the elements constituting the universe while the sampling method refers to the collection of data from a few elements of the universe. Population or universe refers to the aggregate of data source. For example, the number of trees in the forest is the population of trees, the number of cars manufactured by Maruti  Udyog is the population of Maruti cars, the number of schools in Chennai City is the population of schools in Chennai city, etc.

Hence population need not be taken to refer only human beings. Any aggregate from which data is collected is called population or universe. Observation techniques

Observation is one of the methods of data collection used frequently in research. If observation is done correctly, the scope for bias is very much minimized.

Unless the observer is alert is alert and intelligent he might ignore important things.

The observer should be able to convince his target audience the need and importance of what is observed.

Unless an observer is able to relate various things seen or heard or felt, he may not be able to give a satisfactory explanation for what is observed. So he should be a person of analytical and critical nature.

Definition of Concepts

It is reiterated that no concepts are easy to define. Even while defining common place objects like books, tables or automobiles, one may encounter difficulties if precision is aimed at although we can point out these objects and take a picture embracing a definition would be difficult because of its variety and complexity.

Other concepts, like frustration, aggression, or motivation, are still more difficult to define because they are constructs; that is, they represent inferences at a higher level of abstractions from concrete events are their meanings cannot be easily conveyed by pointing to specific objects, individuals or events.
